Expressly For Fun – The 2008 Buzzards Bay Regatta Welcomes A New Class!

Have you or sailors you know looked from your cockpit as the race boats head out the harbor for a day of tackling the buoys and wished in some ways you were headed in the same direction? Have you wanted to try the Wednesday night beer can races but have not been able to pull the crew together? Have you avoided a starting line because of the apparent chaos created by lots of boats trying to get to the same spot at the same time? Have you just have never had the time to read through the tomes of racing tactics and strategy? Or are you at the point where the cruising is great, but you’d like to add an element to your sailing program and spice things up a bit?

Well, we are responding to your call, and have created Expressly for Fun, a program that removes those obstacles and creates an environment where you can get out on the race course, get your feet wet and feel at ease.

Developed by the BBR, with support from Sail Magazine and guidance from Adam Loory of UK Sailmakers and the Huguenot Yacht Club, Expressly for Fun is intended for sailors new to racing, with the hope of encouraging them to experience the joy of sailboat racing and another activity out on the water.

While an integral part of the BBR, the Expressly for Fun fleet will follow a slightly different program. On Friday August 1, you and your crew will join former All-American sailor and renowned college coach, Ken Legler for a seminar on Sailboat Racing 101. Ken will cover all the key topics - boat speed, tactics/strategy, the rules, and more – and share with you the secrets and tricks he has learned over the decades which have won him and his teams many championships. Following this orientation, you and your crew will take to the water on Saturday and Sunday for an opportunity to test the waters on simplified race courses and starting lines, and get support and feedback from Ken and other experienced racers. There will be plenty of fun prizes and awards, and everyone will be encouraged and welcomed into all the festivities that come with one of the best regattas on the east coast! If all goes as we expect, by the time Sunday afternoon roles around, you’ll be an even better sailor and looking forward to returning in 2009.

Please check back here as more information and details will be posted as they become available. See the latest schedule for the program. Also, if you have any questions, please drop us a note at info@buzzardsbayregatta.com.

We look forward to seeing you in August!

Expressly for Fun Checklist

First step Read the Notice of Race.

The Notice of Race (NOR) is a document that includes information that would help competitors decide whether to attend the event or that conveys other information they will need before the Sailing Instructions (SI) become available (usually SI are available at check-in). For more details see Appendix J of the Racing Rules of Sailing.
Second step Register on the web site. For help contact registration@buzzardsbayregatta.com.

Note that a US Sailing ID is not required for Expressly for Fun registration.
Third step Submit your PHRF rating certificate.

If you do not have a current PHRF New England certificate, visit http://www.phrfne.org to download, print and complete the application. Then FAX it to 508-463-2323 or upload it using the link provided in the registration response email. There is no PHRF application fee. BBR will assign you a rating for this race based on your application and PHRF principles.
Fourth step Check-in on Thursday (July 31, 2008) afternoon (1600 to 2030) or Friday (August 1, 2008) morning (0700 to 1000) and pickup materials.
Fifth step Attend the Friday (August 1, 2008) seminar at (or near) Beverly Yacht Club (exact location to be announced) starting at 1000.
Sixth step Race on Saturday (August 2, 2008) and Sunday (August 3, 2008) and have fun! Don't hesitate to ask for assistance at info@buzzardsbayregatta.com.
